So Much To Do, So Little Time

“So much to do, so little time!”

I don’t know who coined that phrase but “ain’t that the truth?!”which-way It has been so long and so much has happened during my blogosphere absence!  I miss the fantasy world of the internet.

My only real focus:

As many of you know, my grandson is once again fighting the battle of and for his life!  Every time I actually say that out loud I could scream and kick and throw something.  Yeah, pretty much a tantrum.  I am certainly not beneath acting out that way but when the feeling strikes it seems I am usually not in the opportune place to display or vent my anger.  For those of you who are not familiar Drake’s journey and are interested you can start with this story.

Where to begin?

I was working two jobs for most of April.  I was trying to wrap up a few things, train the new assistant all the while I was setting up the new system at the new office.  One of my very good friends left the law firm he had been a partner in for a few years to start his own law office and asked me to come along and be a part of his adventure!  It has been very interesting to say the least.  The prior law office that I worked with dealt primarily with real estate and elder law.  The new law firm concentrates in criminal, civil, personal injury, malpractice, family law and employment law.  Never a dull moment!

And Then?

Halle Lynn Gratton made her entrance into the world on May 6, 2009!  She weighed in at 8 lbs 9.8 oz and was 21 inches long.  She is so adorable.  And such a good baby.  I hesitate to say that out loud for fear of, I don’t know, speaking too soon.  All went well for the most part.  Mommy had plenty of complications throughout her pregnancy but at the end of the day, more like the end of a few weeks, every thing seems to be fine.  Danielle wouldn’t know what to do with herself if she didn’t have extreme stress.  I would like to actually see that for myself.  I can’t remember what kind of young lady she was before this ordeal.

More good stuff – My oldest daughter decided it was time for her to get married.  Thankfully, it was very low key, very relaxing and enjoyable.  It was a real pleasure to add hope and inspiration to our routine.

Oh, yes, there’s more!

Did I mention that my brother had a heart attack?  I truly can’t remember exactly when it (they) occurred.  He had a few stints put in, took some time off, got some meds and he’s good.  Thank you very much.  He had to get better to be here for his new grandbaby.  Our family has heart disease (not cancer).  Not to be outdone, my mom made a little side trip to the hospital this week.  I lose track of days but my husband also experienced an ER trip for chest pains.  Luckily (?) he had pulled a muscle.  I can’t make this stuff up!  My friends have always told me I should write a book.

Again my only real focus:

Drake has endured 6 rounds of chemo, bi-weekly doctor visits, daily shots and continues to be an inspiration to us all.  He is clearly amazing and this is not Granny bragging.  Just a fact.   He has been battling this demon (who will NOT win) since he was 10 months old with only a short reprieve.  Doctors, hospital and medicine is a way of life for him and all he has known.

Drake is scheduled for surgery for the extraction of his tumors on Monday, June 29, 2009.  I have so many thoughts and fears that I cannot speak.  Yet, at the same time, there are so many unknowns that I don’t even know what to fear.

I have decided to believe in miracles and will maintain a positive absolute attitude.

Yay!

April 2, 2009 by BloggerNewbie

drake-ronaldyayI don’t even know what day it is but we received totally great news this week.  Right to the point – the chemo is working, Drake’s tumors are shrinking.  That is about all we know (or I know) at this point.  And at this point, that is good enough for me.  I will just take that good news and revel in it for a few days.

As many of you know, my grandson Drake was diagnosed with cancer when he was just 10 months old.  He had been in remission for about 10 months this past January (2009) when the ugly, nasty, “c” word came back.  I previously tried to explain his story as best I could but sometimes I don’t know where to begin!

To add more challenge to the family, my daughter is expecting a new baby the first week of May. Finally, she can be excited about the anticipation of a new baby girl!

So much is going on I haven’t had 5 continuous minutes to put together.  I have had computer/internet/network problems all over the place – work, home, friends, family.  I used to like working on computers!  Well, it’s back to business.

Misery Loves Company

March 17, 2009 by BloggerNewbie

“Misery Loves Company”

It has been my observation of late that the saying or cliche’ – misery loves company – is a totally true statement.

People follow the negative attitude like a herd.  The “herd” theory works everywhere you look, actions, attitude, etc.  Except, of course, when the leader of the herd is positive;  then the herd dissipates to follow other negative powers that be.   Do people find it easier to be negative?

Ian from Quantum Learning just wrote a post about the world wide garbage dump epidemic and it just gets me started on a roll of crabbing.

Actually the post or conversation was not negative.  The actions of some people was the discussion of negative.  I can’t help myself.  Hmmm, so it is true.  Crabby likes crabby.

glass-half-fullWell, in this case, sort of.  We were just discussing how appalling it is to see the thoughtless disregard of the beauty of nature.   It is a common reaction for most people to be stunned by this outrage.  The act itself is what made me think of negative following negative not the discussion.

Why do people have a complete disregard for property of others?  They wouldn’t give it a thought to throw garbage in their own yard.  Well most wouldn’t.   I don’t get it.

This is just one example of negative following negative.  The real purpose of this post is to discuss how and/or why misery loves company.

I have noticed, for myself, the more people who are negative around me, the more negative I myself become.  Why is it that positive isn’t so contagious?  Positive is contagious to a degree.  But if you have a group of people with one positive leader and one negative leader you will find a bigger group following the negative leader.

I have even gone so far as to try and turn the conversation around to positive but eventually give up.  Then some time later I find myself being negative.  It is harder to bring yourself back from the glass half empty attitude.  How do you get people to see the glass as half full?  That there is a bright side somewhere in the midst of your ordeal?  Yeah, believe me – I know, sometimes it is buried.

Why is that?  Don’t most people want to be positive?  Don’t you hear people complain about negative attitudes?  [Hey, that sounds ironic].  What do you do to stay positive?  Why is there not a saying “blissfulness loves company?”

Changing Hosts? Step by Step How to.. Step 3 of 4

March 12, 2009 by BloggerNewbie

“Changing Hosts?  Step by Step How to.. Step 3 of 4″

Okay, we decided we needed to change hosts.   We had to get prepared and backup both our blog files and our data files.

4-stepNow it is time for step three.  Begin to familiarize yourself with the new host server.  You will have access to a file manager or control panel to be able to monitor, change and update your files.  You will also set up your email and user name to access your file transfer protocol software.

You can see from the screen shots below all of the service options to choose from.  You can familiarize yourself with each section before you switch over.  It is important to be confident with the database section as this is your blog data and post files.

cpanel-options

cpanel-menu

Make sure website name is same.  When the new host server sets up your blog address make  sure it is the same as you are currently using.

My first set up of my blog was with another host server and they set up my blog as  www.bloggernewbie.com/blog vs www.bloggernewbie.com which doesn’t sound like a big deal only it is to those feed readers!  You can transfer your subscribers from one RSS feed to another but I am not real confident that it is a smooth transition.

I Have the Answer to the Financial Crisis

February 20, 2009 by BloggerNewbie

exclamation-point

We all know the United States is in a financial crisis.  You can’t pick up a newspaper, watch a television program or even search the internet without every other news piece screaming about the impending collapse of our financial system.    Somewhat makes me wonder how much of this “news” is propaganda.

All I can say is I am getting totally annoyed with the whole conversation.  Everyone is looking around pointing fingers at the next guy.  Some are even asking “how could this have happened?  It’s so blatantly obvious it’s irritating.  Frankly, it is all getting a little old!

How about personal responsibility?

“You and you alone are responsible for who you are and what you do.”   ~ Author Unknown

We all have choices and from those choices we get either rewards or consequences.  Simple as that.   Your failure to plan or your poor financial decisions are only your responsibility.  The government is not obligated to bail you out!

What will happen to the US economy if the auto makers fail?  Nothing.  Something or someone else will take their place.  Just like any other business failure in the history of the US.

I live in a small rural area.  Plenty of businesses have come and gone.  Our town has struggled with our economy for as long as I can remember and as long as our parent’s generation can remember.  None of us can remember the government coming around to bail us out.

I am not happy to be the one to tell everyone but we are suffering from our own self-inflicted woes.  I am just as guilty as the next poor slob.   Yeah, I am a victim too.  I have had to tighten my budget because of  the options I chose.  I decided to buy a John Deere tractor and for that decision I am not able to splurge on a vacation this year.

No, I am not a victim.  I am by no means here to boo hoo to anyone.  I am just explaining my choice and the outcome.  I am not sorry about my choice.   That is exactly what it is -  a choice.  I decided I could only have one and I wanted the tractor.  Personal responsibility.  Hmmm, sounds like a new fad.

If you are not overjoyed with the position you are in at this point then do something about it. Stop blaming others, stop envying others, take some personal responsibility.

You remember Newton – For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.  Good, bad – happy, sad – cold, hot -  you get the idea.

At the end of the day, you stand alone with your choice.  Isn’t freedom of choice great?

What Has Become of Valentine’s Day?

February 12, 2009 by BloggerNewbie

“What Has Become of Valentine’s Day?”

I can’t express how tired I am of all the “so-called” holiday celebrations being exploited by commercialism.  There are no holidays, only sale days.  Say it like it is.

Bobby Finstock of Pointless Banter recently wrote a post describing the blog’s newest sponsored event – a Valentines Day Contest. I just love contests that are easy and this is one at the top of the list.  It’s an “anything goes” type of contest.  It’s all about LOVE.  Not!

pink-treeI have actually witnessed “celebrations” of Valentine’s day by parents buying children gifts such as bicycles, Ipods, Computers, etc.  What the heck is that?  Christmas? (yeah, another holiday without a trace of origin or tradition).

And how did flowers, chocolates and now PJ’s become valentine gifts?  Do you even know how Valentine’s Day originated?  Love notes, just love notes.

I wonder when we are going to get a Valentine’s Day Tree?  I’ve seen pink trees around Christmas.  How easy would it be to start that “tradition”?

There isn’t a faster way to start a trend than on the internet.  We could have pink wreaths, pink lights, there are already more pink decorations than we can think of!

pink-flamingoNext, we could petition the government to include Valentine’s day as a required, mandatory day off from work.  This would aid in bringing families back together.  Even save the sanctity of marriage.  The United States of America would survive a breakdown!

We could make pink flamingos the new mascot of Valentines Day!

Is it possible that Valentine’s day could be as big if not bigger than Christmas?  Could there be more presents?  Is there anything that we could add to the Season of Valentine’s Day that the Season of Christmas day doesn’t have?  What do you think?  Can we handle another 2-3 month holiday prep time?  The shopping, the decorating, the cooking?  The pressure, the stress and oh yeah, the joy?

Changing Hosts? Step by Step How to.. Step 2 of 4

February 11, 2009 by BloggerNewbie

“Changing Hosts?  Step by Step How to.. Step Two”

4easysteps

This article is part two in a four part series. In part one we discussed choosing a host. Not an easy task. You can get just as many recommendations in favor of a host as you can get warnings against a host.  Really, it turns out to be more of a trial and error experience than a skill in choosing a host.  However, there are some technicalities to consider so make sure you check out the first post.

php-myadminFirst and most important is the database backup. These are all your posts that you have poured hours and hours into.

Introducing – phpMyAdmin.

PhpMyAdmin is web based software used for managing MySQL databases.  PHP was at first created as a simple scripting platform called “Personal Home Page”.  It is an open source server-side language, which is used for creating dynamic web pages, which will be embedded in HTML.  PHP is usually used in conjunction with a MySQL database on Linux/UNIX web servers. It is one of the most popular scripting languages among today’s web developers.  MySQL – Structured Query Language (SQL).  SQL is the most popular language for adding, accessing, and processing data in a database, and is most noted for its rapid processing, proven reliability, and ease and flexibility of use.  Not the easiest software to learn but not the hardest. It took me a little bit to figure it out but eventually I got it. I manage my database with phpMyAdmin through cPanel.  I am not that familiar with any other method but it looks like this:

This is part of the menu options in cPanel that comes with my webhost company.

partial-cpanel-options-menu

As you can see towards the bottom of the menu, there is a database section where we can choose phpMyAdmin. Once I click on phpMyAdmin, I am taken to the list of files in the database.

phpmyadmin

You cam see the most important file (to me) – wp_posts.  These are the files that are extremely difficult to replace if not impossible.  At the very bottom of this list is the “check all” option.  You need to click this option to select all the files to get them ready for backup or as the program describes “export”.

After you have selected the files and have chosen the export option, you will be taken to the following screen:

database-backup

You will notice the database files are highlighted in the top left corner.  There is a scroll bar to the right to verify all files are selected.  The option under the selected files defaults to SQL.  The rest of the options are also default and if you are not sure of the choices, leave the defaults.  The next step was a secret. It was difficult to notice the “save as file” option that has to be clicked before you choose GO!  Once you click “save as file”, then click GO you will be brought to another screen asking you to choose where to save the file, much like any other “save as” request.

The phyMyAdmin database backup process is vital to restoring your post data as well as comment data and other things.

Don’t forget about blog data backup! backup-restore-disaster-recovery The very next first rule of any change on any blog or website – backup  – please, just backup.  If you somehow make a mistake or crash or just don’t like the changes you have made you can always restore a good backup.  It is the only plan for disaster recovery.   I have such good advice.  I totally should take listen to me.  I do backup at least every week if not more but when I get into “tweakin” I get to focused on the changes and forget the backup!

So how do you backup your goods?  There are two different types of data to backup. There are two different programs to use to protect your data.

filezilla

More initials – FTP.  What is it with every industry that they have to have their own language in abbreviations?  FTP – File Transfer Protocol.   This is the software which is the manner you will transfer your files from your host server to your hard drive or from your hard drive to your server.  And guess what the good news is?  The software is free from FileZilla.

Some say you may need the beginners guide to FTP but in all the blogging terms or tasks, the file transfer via FTP is by far the easiest as long as you understand the file and folder structure of a computer.

Please take note of the screen shot below:

2009-02-10_ftp

  1. Host: This is part of your login information – “ftp.blogname.com”
  2. Username: Given to you by your host company.
  3. Password: Chosen by you when you set up your new host.
  4. Local site: This is your hard drive directory.
  5. Host site: This is the directory of your host server.
  6. Filename – local site: These are the folders under the directory listed on your local site.
  7. Filename – host site: These are the folders under the directory listed on your host site.

What ever file or files you want to copy from your local site to your host site (or vice versa) is simply dragged to the directory or folder where you want to place the files.

The bottom “window”  (which I did not number) will show the transfer as it is happening.  It is really so easy.

So there we have it!   Our first step in changing hosts is to actually choose a host. Sounds so simple but oh, not so.  Before you go any further, step number two, you need to safeguard your data.  What is a blog without data?  Next week we will go through getting acquainted with your new host.

Any questions?  Need clarification?  Have something to add?

The Marriage of Blogging

January 27, 2009 by BloggerNewbie

“The Marriage of Blogging”

I read an interesting post the other day on Steven Sanders.com that related blogging to marriage and I wondered  how is blogging like marriage?

I was thinking of my own marriage and trying to relate it to blogging (as I do with most topics).  I can relate just about anything to blogging.  I know, it has been said before, intervention, addiction, blah, blah, blah, yeah, whatever.

Anyway, how is blogging similar to marriage? There are a few characteristics that should be the same.

passion

  • They both should be something you are passionate about.

Life is too short to be less than passionate about anything you spend your time on.  If it doesn’t make your heart do a little flip then it must be a chore.  We all have chores but do we all have passion?

I am happy to say I have passion in both my blog and my marriage.

  • I look forward to seeing my husband every morning and every night.  I still have the butterflies in my belly when he comes through the door after work or when he calls me just to say hi.
  • I wake up looking forward to my blog.  I get excited when I have a good traffic day.  I love to write and interact with my readers.

love-laughter

  • They both should be filled with Love and Laughter!

Love and laughter are as essential as food and water.  I can’t imagine a marriage or a blog without them!  If you can’t or don’t love or laugh, what’s the point?

  • Love certainly goes without saying although I hear it and say it several times a day.  More importantly I see it and show it every single day.
  • And laughter!  I don’t know how I would get through some days without all the laughter.  My husband and I have an amazing connection with our humor.  We think we’re funny anyway, I am not so sure about what others think but that’s okay.
  • I love my blog!  I look forward to working and playing on the site every day, several times a day.  I hope readers look forward to stopping by, commenting and interacting in the community of BloggerNewbie.
  • I know I have gotten a few laughs from my site and I think a few readers have gotten a few laughs as well.

interesting

  • They both should  be Damn Interesting!

There are some not so interesting “duties” in our day to day lives that are obligations and responsibilities. In the areas of your life that you are able to choose your joy, don’t you think they should be interesting?  Actually, damn interesting!

  • Don’t you think your marriage should be “damn interesting”?  Again, I am lucky to say that there is rarely a dull moment with my husband.  As with anything worth working for, you get out what you put in.  We choose to keep our relationship interesting.
  • My blog is “damn interesting” to me!  I hope it is interesting enough for my readers to keep people coming back.  I like to mix things up a bit hoping it is keeping things interesting.  Your blog is what you make it.

I am sure there are plenty of other characteristics that are similar in marriages and blogs.  What do you find similar?

Changing Hosts? Step by Step How to.. Step 1 of 4

January 21, 2009 by BloggerNewbie

“Changing Hosts? Step by Step How to..”

4easysteps

I changed hosts recently and learned my “how to” the hard way.   I was down for about 5 days.  I couldn’t believe it and with every passing day all I could think was - You’ve gotta be kidding me!

Why is it so difficult to explain in detail, step by step instructions to complete any blog task?  Most “how to” articles are in detail and therefore somewhat lengthy.  This will be valuable information to the novice computer geek at some point so make sure you bookmark on Delicious so you don’t lose it.  If you don’t have an account with Delicious, how do you stay organized?

Okay, lets get started.

Why do you want to change hosts?  Capacity, speed, cost, technical support?

I wasn’t able to use a feature in wordpress for publishing posts at a future date and was told in the help forums that it was my host company that was not compatible. Turns out – not the case.  But changing hosts was oh so much fun!

Their are 4 crucial steps to accomplish a successful host change.  Today, we will discuss Step One.

The first step in changing hosts is to actually choose a new host.  When I was searching for a new host I asked around in the social networks for guidance. For each time or each person that I asked for recommendations, I received as many different answers. So no real help there.

I decided I would have to research the information and make the best informed decision.  I googled the top ten web hosting companies and came up with the following list.   I then compared each plan each company offered. You can click on the following graphic to view each of the top ten.  This list is as of January 3, 2009.

top-10-web-hosting-reviews

There are a few technical issues you need to consider when changing hosts.   As with all industries there are certain terms you need to be familiar with.  You should understand the following terminology before choosing a host.

Bandwidth or Data Transfer: Many web hosting companies offer unlimited data transfer.  Some have a monthly limit.  A server transfers data (graphics, text, audio/video files) to a user’s web browser.  Web sites that get a lot of page views would need a larger volume for data transfer or bandwidth.  Of the top ten hosting companies, only two have a limit on the bandwidth.  3000 GB being the least amount – still a good amount of page views. Approximatley 40,000 page views = 1 GB of data transfer.

Shared Web hosting: Most common type of web hosting.  Most new bloggers will be looking for shared web hosting. The most reasonable cost as multiple sites are hosted or share space on a single server.  Each site owner has a specific amount of resources  allocated on the one server.

Dedicated Hosting: The opposite of Shared Web hosting.   Each site owner has their own server.  They have a considerable amount of availability of resources for more disk space, more data transfer and are able to host more websites.  Dedicated hosting costs more and is usually for larger sites that have more specific needs.

Storage Space (Disk Space): The amount of storage space you need depends on what type of website you have.  If you have a large amount of images, HTML files – web pages, audio or video files or graphics, you will need a greater amount of storage space.

Now we know the technical issues to look for.  Do you need a dedicated server or can you use the shared hosting plan?  Will the company be able to supply you with the data transfer you desire?  Will your website require a large amount of space? You need to make a decision based on your needs.   Different websites fall into different categories.  Most new bloggers will start out with shared web hosting.

What else do you want to consider? Customer service is critical.  Do they offer 24/7 customer service via email, live chat and a toll free number?

Choosing the Host is Step No. 1 and very important.  Step No. 2 is crucial and we will discuss a few technical issues.  It will be so much fun.  FTP, PHP and backup will be your new best friends.

Any questions or concerns about Step No. 1?  Anything to add?  Any Suggestions?  Speak up!

Make sure to stop back next week for Step No. 2 of 4 in your changing hosts journey.

Developing a New Community

January 14, 2009 by BloggerNewbie

community-developing

How do you develop a new community?

I have lived in the same community all my life.  I worked in the insurance industry for about 21 years.  The first 12 years I was a partner in a local agency.  For various reasons, I decided to start my own insurance agency.  Many people told me that it was extremely difficult – next to impossible – to start an agency from scratch.  Others told me that the one thing our town did not need was yet another insurance agency.

I, of course, did not listen.  I had to see for myself, I had to try.  Maybe it will work for me.  What is the worst that could happen?    I decided the worst that could happen would be that I would fall flat on my face and I’d have to look for another job.  I could live with that.

As many of you know, I am often inspired by quotes. Quotes Motivate me and inspire me to action.  An encouraging friend offered me the following quote to think about:

“The best thing to do is the right thing,

The next best thing to do is the wrong thing,

The worst thing to do is nothing!”

~ Author Unknown

In the offline world in my little town I have a large circle of influence in which I mingle.  I have many friends in many different areas of my life.

~ Business associates and friends
~ Golf friends
~ Lodge of Elks friends
~ Motorcycle friends
~ Yes, even some John Deere friends

Well what is the point of this tour down memory lane in smalltown USA?  The reason I was successful in starting an agency from scratch in a small town inundated with insurance agencies was because I had a circle of influence from which to draw from.  My circle of friends and contacts offered not only support but were a great source of business.

I built these relationships over time.  I joined organizations, social groups, participated in community events, etc.  I became well known in my little world.  I knew people by name when they came in.  They were made to feel comfortable.  This was not some stuffy, starch white insurance agency.  Come in, sit down, tell me about yourself!

So  how do you develop a new blog community?

I have lived in the same community all my life.  I bought my first computer complete with the internet about 25 years ago.  I didn’t know anyone who had the internet or anyone who even knew what the internet was.  I was one of three people in our town who had the internet.  For various reasons, last year I decided to start a blog.  Many people told me that it was extremely difficult to make money with a blog.  Others told me that that I would be one in a million amongst other blogs.  Well thank you.  Some didn’t know what a blog was but thought it was a waste of time anyway.

I, of course, did not listen.  I had to see for myself, I had to try.  Maybe it will work for me.  What is the worst that could happen?    I decided the worst that could happen would be that I would fall flat on my face and be out the $9.95 monthly web server fee.  I could live with that.

The offline world is a different from the online world yet the same.  People are still people.  So what do we need to do to be successful?

  • Build relationships over time

~ Blogging associates and friends
~ Writing friends
~ Forum friends
~ Twitter friends
~ Social network friends
~ Niche friends

  • Encourage community

~ Treat people feel like they belong.  Treat your visitors as friends and they will come home again and again. Sounds too simple, too basic? Think about how you like to be treated when you go to a blog. Do you like to go to a blog when your comments aren’t even acknowledged? Feels like you are talking to yourself. Didn’t we get enough of that when we first started our blog?

~ Help your fellow bloggers and social network buddies.  Promote your friends sites.  Offer help without expecting anything in return.  Build your relationships. There is nothing more annoying than a “taker”.  You know the kind.  Always asking, asking 10 times to your 1, not in any hurry to help back.

Get to know people by name when they stop over to your blog.  If they stop at your blog don’t you think you should visit their blog? Make them feel comfortable.  This iss not some stuffy, starch white blog.  Come in, sit down, tell me about yourself!

You can’t buy a community, you have to nurture it – develop it.  Community doesn’t happen overnight.  Relationships take time.   What is the key to your success in building community?  Be sincere.  Be helpful.  Be polite.  Be business minded as well as friend minded.
