Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure.
~ George Edward Woodberry
You know I have said time and again “What’s the worst that can happen?” in regards to making decisions. If you have that attitude and use that philosophy to guide you with your choices, and you can live with whatever the “worst” is, then it is easier to go for it.
It sounds so easy. In order to succeed your desire for success has to be stronger than your fear of failure. These type of quotes must speak to me loudly because I usually choose them.
It does resonate with me because fear stops me from doing a lot of things. Most of the time I don’t even know what I am afraid of. Sometimes I think I have somewhat pinpointed the fear or think I know what is stopping me, but it usually sounds so silly that I don’t believe I have realized what the fear is.
- Fear of failure.
- What will people think?
- I will look silly.
These are all “who cares” excuses. I have been amazed with myself at my courage with some events in my life and have also been just as amazed at the extreme paralyzing fear that has stopped me from the smallest challenges.
So what really stops a person from trying to be successful? All of the above and then some. What can a person do to overcome these fears?
Usually previous successes inspire me to try new challenges. If I can pull that off, I can certainly do this.
This post doesn’t have all the answers. More like all the questions.
What do you do to overcome your fears? What drives you to face your challenges?

Hey Dee,
Now don’t get the impression that I do these kinds of things for all of my fears, but I’ll give you two examples for me.
When I got hired to be a Paramedic with LAFD, I was scared to death of heights. So, I climbed a ladder at every opportunity. I made myself just get up and do it, and eventually, much of that fear went away.
A little over a decade ago, I developed a sudden fear of flying. It wasn’t about heights, it was about crashing. I think I got it in my brain that since I had flown so many miles, the odds were starting to go against me. So, I became a pilot. Believe me, there is nothing more humbling than the day the instructor, gets out of the plane and says, “She’s all yours. Go on your first solo.” Very sobering to look over and see no one else up in the cockpit…
Anyway, tackling demons head on can sometimes work.
Cheers
George

George:
great tips. fear can be paralyzing! I often have to talk myself into doing some things and convince myself that my fears are without merit.

It is usually not the defeat that gets me, but what I did wrong. I drive myself crazy going over what I should have done differently so I can get better for the next time.
As far as fear stopping you from trying – fortunately I am too naive to consider a lot of what could happen before I start a project. The first time I signed up for a poker tournament my poker friends gave me the blunt opinion that they didn’t think I would stand a chance. Which was probably true and I had fortunately already signed up before telling them. I actually almost didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t want to be laughed at. I ended up winning which astounded some of them – and me for that matter. I didn’t think I had too big of chance but just wanted to see what it was like.

I think the older I get the more fear stops me for some reason?! It is wonderful to be fearless-keep it up!
that’s a good thing to remember, the worse that could happen. it’s always better to try than to do nothing. that’s probably the worse thing.

reminds me of another quote:
the best thing to do is the right thing, the next best thing to do is the wrong thing, the worst thing to do is nothing. so, yup, you are right!
