“Question of the Week? Vote in our Poll!”

What is your blog writing plan?  Do you have a strategy? Or do you just create your masterpieces when the feeling is right?

Do you post with a regular schedule or again do you post as the feeling strikes?

I read a few articles throughout the blogosphere regarding a posting schedule.  There are as many differing opinions as there are posts.

Skelly from skelliewag.org writes about her view on posting frequency .

Daniel Stucco from DailyBloggingTips also offers this post on  posting frequency .

Is there a right or wrong answer? In Blogging, is there ever a right or wrong answer?  The answer is yes and no.

So the question is – too many or not enough ?  Well the answer is – It’s all relative!

If you have a schedule or any intention of a posting routine, how do you stay on track?

I try to post with a regular schedule.   I decided, a month or so ago for various reasons, to cut back on my posting frequency.  My plan is to write my Monday Motivation series on Monday (of course) and this Question of the week series on Friday with a pillar article – (as Yaro would say) during the week – like Wednesday.

The point of this whole post – “do you write your posts each day or for the week?  Ideally, each weekend, my course of action is to write my posts for the week.  Early in my blogging career I received some invaluable advice in a post from my favorite guru .  Darren Rowse wrote a post about batch processing .  This post is a “must read” for any blogger.  I cannot stress enough how helpful this article will be in your writing career.

One more hint to add to Darren’s post – you need discipline to follow through with your tasks.  Most self-employed people do need discipline.  You usually don’t have anyone standing over you requiring production.  When I don’t follow through with “self discipline” and keep myself organized my “plan” usually falls apart at the most inopportune time.

How do you keep yourself in order?  Do you even  have order or are you a free bird?  What’s your opinion?

Toodles – Blog Happy!

I actually try to write each post as they come. Some are are harder to produce than others, just because of the nuances of the topic that is being written about. This is particularly true when the topic is somewhat controversial. In instance like these, the time between blog posts may be longer. Another time, for me where there I want to give the post a some time to be out there as the most recent post where it will get the most exposure.

I write as ideas come to me. Its hard for me to write on a schedule though I can be a bit more organized with it. If I created more of a blog post outline, it maybe be easier for me to post on schedule – this would be especially good for when I need a blogging break.

  3. Mike:

There are so many views on posting schedules and how to be productive that you just have to choose what is right for you. There are just as many reasons why we blog and that is really what should drive a person to post, when and how.

    Carla:

I like to have a plan with blogging or with just about everything. It keeps me motivated and gives me a sense of obligation. I was trying to write everyday and that is just too much pressure. That affects the quality and fun of blogging!

  4. Natural says:

I got nothing. NO plan, nothing. I write when I feel like it now. maybe that’s once a week. i have several posts in my head now, but i’m not ready to write them. usually i say my posts have to write themselves, meaning, i don’t have to think of what to say, it just pours out of me. i think of things i could say and when i feel there’s enough in my head, i sit down and see what happens.

I just love spontaneous people. For the most part that is how we “plan” our activities…it drives people around us crazy! We decide to go out to dinner at the last minute or not, we don’t usually accept invites too far in advance, what if we don’t want to go when the time arrives?? yeah, drives peeps crazy!

My main blog is the one I keep for my shop where I post new items that I put in the shop from time to time. I generally only add to the blog when I have new items. All of my other blogs might be lucky to get a post once a month or so here lately lol….. I think I either need to cut down on the amount of blogs I manage so that I can get more readers.

  7. I generally try to post about every day or with only a few days in between posts. I’ll frequently write about what seems pertinent that day, but there are times when I plan posts in advance. I do have one particular “series” which is the First of the Month, posted on the first of each month. I also post writing articles on Wednesdays. I’d say I’m fairly spontaneous.

I don’t really have a routine. I wish I did, though, as I do find I’m incredibly inefficient when it comes to online and blogging. I like to have at least one post ready for publishing (and I love that Wordpress also me to future date stuff) and ideally would like 3 or 4 finished articles.

In reality I write as stuff comes to me. I have about 20 drafts at various stages of completion .. but then I get an inspiration and write and publish that straight away. As I say … it’s not efficient, but somehow I manage.

  9. David:

There is so much advice about being organized and productive but as I said in an earlier post “knowledge is useless” unless of course you use it! It is so much easier to say than to do. I had a second blog for about 6 weeks and it was way too much for me to handle. I am not sure what direction (if any) this blog is heading? My niche is more like “a little bit of this and that”.

    Corey:

I would ideally like to have a few posts almost ready but like you if I am writing something pertinent of the day it may not be relevant next week. I do try to be consistent as far as the schedule but I’d rather have the writing done for the week that way I don’t put any stress on myself.

    Ian:

My problem with blogging and the internet is there are so many tasks to do I don’t know what to do first or what to focus on and I get very little done. It’s annoying, mostly with myself. I am always “busy” but not necessarily productive. Although, I am my hardest critic so…

  10. I used to post 5 articles a week and then my Sunday links but I got out two of the articles – it was just too much. Some of my articles are short but I’ve had to do a lot of work on them – trying the code, getting it to work, have an example to show … I also used to write each article at the last minute. Now I’m usually over a week ahead with scheduled posts – it’s made things a lot easier. I have over 100 drafts because I make a draft every time I have an idea. And recently I’ve also had a “theme” of the week – this week was love, last week was sticky posts, and the week before was books. This seems to have me a lot more organized.

  11. Kim:

I used to try and write everyday but that is too much pressure that I put on myself at this point. If I didn’t have one of those darn j-o-b’s I would write twice a day! I have a ton of drafts started too with simple phrases, graphics or just a title. Some are further along than others. Ideally, I would like to have next week all set up ahead of time. You know when life happens, the blog would continue as usual.

  12. Tumblemoose says:

For me, writing (good writing that is) is exhaustive. I could not do very well writing 3 – 4 posts in an afternoon and then publishing throughout the week. I know this works for some folks, but I just don’t have that kind of creative juice.

Nice to see you back, by the way

  13. George:

Certain types of writing require more creativity than other types. Research and data type articles for example are just that – research.

Thanks, normalcy feels good right now. Drake’s last scan showed “something” so we are in the land of unknown again. He had been clean for 10 months. Boston Children’s Hospital did a needle biopsy last week but didn’t get enough. The plan is to go in and have a look, options will be decided at that point. For a lack of a more mature response – This Totally SUCKS!

  14. T Edwards says:

I am definitely more of the artistic blogging type. I write when the spirit moves me. I’m sure it would be more if time permitted but everyone knows how life is. I like the idea of having “snippets” of posts written and I’ll switch to that rather than writing my idea notes on napkins and the backs of losing lotto tickets.

Napkins and losing lottery tickets or notebooks are crucial for our genius ideas! I’m not always good at doing as I say!

At one point I had my blog on a schedule and that worked for awhile, but became too stressful and no linger fun. Now I just post what I want to say on the say that I want to say it.

Okay let me try this again without the typos:

At one point I had my blog on a schedule and that worked for awhile, but became too stressful, no longer fun. Now I just post what I want to say on the day that I want to say it.

  18. Debo:

My blog is on a Monday – Wednesday – Friday schedule but for the first 6 months if I didn’t post every day I stressed! I haven’t decided yet if a schedule (whatever it may be) is better or a spontaneous schedule is better. I don’t think either really makes or breaks a blog at this point.

This blog is such a mixture of whatever that I don’t really have a niche or I have several, one or the other. I would say scheduling would make a difference in the type of blog or maybe the type of blogger…

  19. Ben says:

Each of my blogs has a weekly schedule (1 each day). I also use the time each day to promote that specific site. It keeps me focused on a specific topic.

If I tried to post to each of them each day, I would get confused quickly. My content is fairly structured though.

Once I get things the way I want them (3 months or so into it) I might post more frequently on one of the sites since it’s subject matter is open.

  20. Ben:

How many blogs do you have? At this point I have all I can do to handle one! If I was able to devote full time I would have a few..

  21. Ben says:

5 total. Each has a slightly different topic but at some point each touches the subject matter of the others so there is cross-promotion possibilities.

4 are kind of How-to type, and the 5th is just general. So far I am using the 5th as a “what I did on this blog”. But the further I get into it, the more it will expand; such as covering all the good posts I see on other peoples blogs all week, as well as new motivational, positive thinking type stuff.

I considered just starting one, but I wanted to learn a couple other things and figured I would just start a blog for those as well that way readers could see what not to do or what to do through the eyes of someone who is just beginning as well (very different than the eyes of someone who is an expert already). Also, since it takes time to develop readership and content I figured better sooner than later on starting the others.

I have been devoting between 1 – 2 hours each morning doing the blog for that day. This includes writing the post, reading other blogs and commenting if the subject matter is applicable to the blog I am writing that day, etc.

    Ben´s last blog post..Subject Matter

  22. Ben:

You must have a primary blog that you focus on or do you comment on other blogs with the relevant blog information that matches? Do you blog full time?

  23. Ben says:

I make comments on other blogs using the most relevent blog that matches. For instance, if a blog is talking about posting frequency that is applicable to my Blogmaster General site. My other sites are less about blogging and more about other online opportunities so other blogs that cover those topics get comments using the applicable blog. I have a handle for each blog so I don’t get confused. Of course anyone who is interested can click on the about us and make their way to my general topic blog where I lay out all my info and what the handles are for each. Having a different handle for each allows me to answer questions, respond to emails etc. quickly and instantly know which site the question/comment is in regard to.

I don’t blog full time. I am a researcher as a real job, but hope to someday blog full time. I spent the last 6 – 8 months reading other blogs and setting up a couple for friends and family and decided to give it a go.
