Too Many or Not Enough?

Too many posts or not enough posts?  What is considered too many posts or not enough posts?

As with anything that is of your own personal opinion - It’s all relative!

Well since this is my blog I guess I can throw out my opinions.  And since this is your blog, please throw out your opinions in the comment section.

Too many posts?

What determines too many posts?  Posting every day, twice a day, three times a day.  If your blog is the only blog I read then maybe that isn’t too much.  But . . . most bloggers have more than one blog in their reader.

What if you have 100 blogs? (Who has 100 blogs?)  Plenty of people have a large number of blogs.

  • I have “A” list blogs – 22 of them
  • I have “peer” blogs -40 of them
  • I have “not sure yet” blogs – 15 of them
  • I have “writing” blogs – 21 of them

So. . . I guess that would be me who has 100 blogs.  I don’t think I am alone.  In fact, if the truth be known, I am on the low side of the number of blogs most bloggers subscribe to.

SO, having said all of that – how many posts are too many?  Well, let’s do some math.  If everyone of my blogs write even once a day, that is 100 posts a day I would have to read.  Is that even possible?

Not enough posts?

What is not enough?  Is there such a thing as not enough?  What if all of my blogs wrote once a week?  That would be 100 posts a week divided by 7 days would be approximately 15 posts a day.  Is that enough?  If the blogger doesn’t post enough will you lose interest?

Well I guess that would depend on if each post is a Long post or Short post.

No two blogs are alike so not all of them will have the same posting routine.  Therefore, the numbers will vary and my reader will have more than 15 new posts a day!

What do you prefer?

Let’s throw this out for a group opinion.  It will be interesting to get an idea of what the majority of people like.  Not only interesting, but helpful.

It has been my own writing experience that I can put more thought and creativity in a post if  I post less frequently.

I prefer less.  Less is more.

What do you prefer?

I voted for every day for you because i enjoy reading and look forward to reading your post everyday… But your post is the only one i read so i can definately understand where you and your fellow bloggers are coming from. It can be very time consuming

If the writing in a blog is interesting and engaging, I’ll read every time there is a post. That kind of writing can be hard to do on a daily basis.

Personally, I’m find I need to limit written posts because (1) it’s easier to do that way and (2) most visitors only look at an comment on the most recent post, so it’s sometimes better to let the newest post sit there for a couple of days before it gets bumped down by the next post.

Thanks, you are right, it’s easier said than done.

    Mike:

I have so many blogs that I like to read but I could spend an entire day every day just reading and surfing.

  4. I think the mantra should be “Everyday if you’ve something to say”. Posting daily or more just for the sake of saying you are posting a lot most likely will turn your readers off. If you have good content, and something to say, then maybe more than once a day. There are a few blogs out there I like so much I would read every post even if they put out 10 a day…they’re that good (Problogger.net, Copyblogger.com, to name a couple).

I guess what I am saying is that quality should drive quantity.

Holy Crap! You really have more than 100 blogs? When do ya freakin’ sleep?

I’m like, tryin’ to hold down 3.

As far as posting goes, i was doing 2 – 4 per week. My google analytics looked like a cross section of the Andes. My goal for 2009 became to post once a day, every day. Part of this influence was due to the fact that several of the “big boy blogs” posted something every single day over the holidays.

I can tell you that in the two weeks I’ve been doing this, I still have peaks, but the baseline is higher than it has ever been. There is also something to be said for the consistency factor. Folks come to expect it.

Seriously though. 100 blogs? Really? I am amazed/impressed/concerned.

    Howdy..

I follow I guess around 40 blogs… I prefer once every other day postings.. then you don’t get too far behind if you miss a day!

Oh, meant to let you know that I’m really liking your new blog theme, too!

Nice and fresh layout, easy on the eyes… well done!

(although I do squint a little when reading comments – is it because I’m getting older?!)

I think subject matter has a bit to do with it too. A news site might post 10 times a day, or a gadget site might introduce you to to 10 new gadgets, but you’re not going to sit down and read everything on those sites. You’re just expected to skim and read whatever catches your eye.

With an instructional site, it’s a bit of a different beast. If I’m a struggling real estate agent and your blog is teaching me how to become a better real estate agent, I might want to read every word you write. In that case, I could easily get behind if there were 10 new posts a day, and I might eventually get frustrated and stop reading because “I’ll never catch up.”

Yaro Starak’s big meaty business blog is one of those ones where I want to read it all, so I’m glad he only posts a couple times a week.

I also think it depends on how much of a thought leader you are. If you’re putting out a lot of the same information as other bloggers are, then you could probably post more often, because people can skim what they’re already familiar with. If you’re writing some unique stuff that is frequently new to your audience, again you might want to slow it down.

As for myself… heh, I should probably post more to my writing blog, but it’s really just a hobby site for me now. I post daily to my home improvement blog.

  9. Ian Peatey says:

Dee. I just checked and I have exactly 58 in my Google reader and I do struggle to keep up with reading and commenting on everything I want. There are very few daily blogs that I follow … I have some in my reader but tend to skip posts unless the title and first sentence really capture my attention. I tend to read everything from those that post 2 or 3 times a week – especially if they’re in my ‘Top 20’section.

As for writing. Right now I just about manage to keep up with my own schedule of a post every 3 to 4 days. I couldn’t manage more so it is what it is. I put a lot of myself into my posts and don’t want to treat them as ‘throw away’ so I like to have each post at the top of the home page for a few days to give it some exposure.

  10. Matt:

I agree that good content means everything. But if you inundate your readers don’t you think your “good stuff” will get missed? That is one issue, the other issue is do you think a posting schedule is important? A blog that has something to say twice a day for 4 days then nothing to say for 2 days – erratic?

    George:

I obviously can’t read all my blogs every day, although I do peek at everyone’s title and go from there. Then I have some favorites that I just go to every day. (I hope I’m one of your 3 you are trying to hold down).

That’s interesting that you decided to increase your posting schedule. I decided to reduce my posting schedule and focus on writing at least 1 “pillar” article a week along with Monday Motivation and (now Friday) Question of the Week. If I put anything else out there that is just extra. I am thinking the consistency or routine is expected by the readers, although no one commented that I changed my schedule but on the other hand, no one commented on my theme change either – I find that also interesting.

You have a great blog and you are an engaging writer. Your blog is how old? And you are creating your expectations with the results of the big boys – who, one, have been blogging for years, and two, have a staff to do other blogging duties, etc.

We should evaluate our blogs at the end of the first quarter and write a post about our outcome. What should be the criteria?

And thank you for the concern. My family did arrange an intervention and signed me up for a 12 step program. I will be sharing that with everyone shortly. :)

    Ross:

That’s what I was thinking about falling behind and being too overwhelmed by blogs that write every day or more. I need to take a day off to read my email!

Ha Ha, I didn’t read all the comments first. Thanks. I like this theme too. I’ll have to see if I can tweak the size of the comment font. It’s hard to code for all the browsers. You should see this in IE. ugggh!

    Lindsay:

A lot of great points. Often, when I am writing my posts, I am focused on my one thought.

What is your home improvement blog? If it’s anything like your writing blog, I have to have it! I am always trying do-it yourself projects and believe me – I always need help. For some reason, my husband doesn’t trust me so I have to wait until he leaves for work and run around getting my tools and materials out of my hiding spots. hmmph!

    Ian:

Thank you for your opinion. It is important to know what your readers are thinking and why. As I have said before, I tend to do business with people the same way I want people to do business with me. (I think there is a quote there somewhere.) I reviewed my blog over the last 6 months and yes, compared it to some other blogs, and I felt that my posts could be better but I would need more time, and since I have a certain amount of time to work with, I decided to cut back on my schedule.

I also found that blogs (like yours) that post the meaningful, intriguing “stuff” were not posting every day. In any event, that is what I am going to try for at least a few months anyway. My goal is to write better and I think the numbers will take care of themselves.

  11. Tumblemoose says:

Man, I gotta quit posting comments in blogs after midnight.

I thought you meant you OWNED 100 blogs! Ok, so to clarify:

    1. I’m an idiot.
    2. I WRITE for 3 blogging sites
    3. I subscribe to about a dozen through email reader, I read those faithfully.
    4. I have nearly 50 in my RSS reader and honestly I’ve not looked at that in nearly two months.

Otherwise, I don’t have the big boy expectations in terms of results, but I’m taking advantage of my motivation and drive to do the daily postings in my blogs. I put my name on the posts so if it’s not up to my standards, it won’t get posted – so far there’s no shortage of material.

And now that I understand I am still amazed/impressed – but not concerned.

  12. George:

You always make me laugh! I have all I can do to take care of ONE blog and with that my family wants to arrange the intervention.

Writing, as you know all too well, takes enough time to reach perfection (ok)

For myself, I have decided I want to put more value into my posts and more time in promoting it.

It’s great to be motivated and also wise to ride the momentum. Personally, I am glad you are increasing your frequency! Keep up the good work!

  13. Natural says:

personally i prefer reading blogs that DO NOT post everyday. they don’t give people a chance to catch up before they have moved on their next post. it takes me a while to make the rounds to the blogs i like to read, but if you post everyday, i won’t be able to keep up. i think you can lose readers, depending on who you are, that way. i only read ONE BLOG every day that i CANNOT give up.

Natural´s last blog post..You Know It’s Time To Give Up Blogging When….

  14. Natural:

It is hard to keep up and as a result posts do get lost in the shuffle. I read too many favorite blogs so I don’t like miss anything. At the same time, it doesn’t leave you a whole lot of time to write your own or even be social!

  15. Carla says:

I prefer less too. I have probably 60 blogs I subscribe to and it’s hard enough to keep up with them. So far, I have about 500 unread posts in my reader!

Thankfully, a lot of the blogs are fashion blogs so a blogger may post 5-10(!) posts a day, but they are mostly photos, sale announcements, etc – not something that takes more than a few seconds to find out if I’m interested or not. Commenting is rarely necessary unless it’s a contest.

Anything that I have to put some thought into reading and commenting, I prefer less.

  16. Carla:

True, it’s easy to flip through photos or brief posts, but yeah, any that I want to read and comment takes time and when I do things I like to be able to give an honest effort or not do it at all. Thanks for your opinion.
