The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes.
~ Frank Lloyd Wright
Isn’t that the truth? I guess you just appreciate the little things when you get older. I don’t know. Seems to be that way for me.
I like to concentrate on the little things. The little things is what life is all about.
“They say” – the older you get, the more money you make, the more stuff you want?
I am actually the opposite. Downsize the “stuff”.
Instead of getting the big house, we decided to downsize. We don’t need the 3000 square foot home. We actually downsized to about a 1000 square foot home. A little too small. We are building a new home and my husband originally wanted small, around 1200 square foot but we have decided on about 1500. Storage room is a must. No, not for stuff. We need storage room for seasonal items, pantry type items, etc.
The big SUV? Nope, don’t need that either. Little Ford Taurus gets me back and forth to work the whole 2 miles.
We prefer to concentrate on family, friends, the warm sun, the green grass. We would rather not have to stress over the big stuff and have to worry about how we are going to pay for all that stuff.
I like to concentrate on the little things. The little things is what life is all about.
- Those pretty flowers, that nice apple tree, fresh cut grass…
- And right now, even the fresh new fallen snow.
- A baby giggling, Kenny G’s saxophone, a little guy calling you Granny.
The older you become the more calm you become. That is so true. You get to a point when you know it’s not worth it to sweat the small stuff.
Have you found that the longer you live the more beautiful life becomes? What wisdom has life given you?

Hi Dee,
No doubt. Simpler is better. That was one of the truly frustrating things about the holidays – everything just has to be over the top better, bigger and badder than before.
My 5 year old had a pretty good Christmas. Got lotsa stuff. her favorite toy thus far? A Slinky! $3.99 @ walmart. Goota love it.
Cheers!

Hi George;
I refuse to credit Christmas. Every time I see the grandbabies I buy them something so I don’t find it necessary to go big at Christmas. The same between my husband and I, if we want something we buy it.
My daughter, now 24, still has her $8 baby I bought her one year. That was a lesson.
It’s all about the babies!

Dee. This is SO true! Life and beauty is in the small things! I’m also a great advocate of down-sizing not up-sizing. Life’s then less cluttered, stressful and materially focused – leaving more space to enjoy.
I’ve still got a fair few years to go but mostly I’ve learned to slow down, not push so hard and go with the flow.
Lovely post!

Ian Peatey´s last blog post..Bridging the empathy gap
Hey Dee.
I didn’t mean to imply that it is all about Christmas or the fault thereof – just an observation about a particular aspect of downsizing and how much pressure there is to supersize everything. Truly, we are bombarded all year!
Cheers!
George
Ian:
That is my personality – “go with the flow” – for the most part. People really need to focus on what’s important and forget all the fluff..stop wasting time that you could be using to enjoy life!
George:
I completely agree about your Christmas example and this quote was perfect timing in that aspect. The whoopla and commercialism of Christmas is way out of proportion. It almost makes you want to avoid it but the babies so love it and they are the greatest joy of Christmas.
And yes, I totally get that “keeping up with the Jones” is all around us all year. I’m with ya!
We’ve always lived low key — didn’t try to keep up with the anyone else. We marched to the beat of our own drummer and pretty much stayed within the bounds of what we could afford.
As a result, last year, I was able to retire quite a bit early. We’ve lived in the same 1200 square foot house since 1981, though we are in the process of adding a new bedroom and “hobby” room, and we no longer have a mortgage. We do have some debt, but it’s within the means of what we can afford.
Mike Goad´s last blog post..What will 2009 bring for blogging and you?
Hi Mike:
Sometimes it can be difficult marching to your own drum and staying on your own path in this society. Good for you and your family and congrats on the retirement. More people should exercise a little financial responsibility.
It’s common for people to strive for “more” thinking that will make them happy when little do they know less is more and a great place to be!
that’s true for me. seems like the older i get the less stuff i need. i have enough and always try to simplify when I can. Bigger is not always better and neither is more. The more you have the more you have to worry about and maintain. I like me time.
Natural:
I couldn’t agree with you more. “The more you have the more you have to worry about and maintain.” Exactly. You said it all.
