“Question of the Week? Vote in our Poll!”
Blog contest! Wahoo – Yay!
There are almost as many blog contests in the blogosphere as there are blogs! Sometimes I don’t know what to think about contests. Are they worth the time and effort? What am I going to get out of all this work. Is it too much work?
Contests – Yes, No or Maybe. What do you think?
Yes. I’ve entered plenty of contests. Some are more effort than others. Not necessarily a talent challenge, more like a chore. My favorite contest by far was an actual writing contest. Didn’t feel like a chore at all. We had to put together a fable. My entry was The Wise Sheep. It was so interesting and enjoyable.
No. I’ve seen some contests that were totally self serving for the host. All work and no play for the entrant. No thank you. I would think most people enter a contest for their own benefit. Often one of the requirements of a contest is to sign up for the blog’s RSS subscription. Does the blogger really want that kind of subscriber? I wonder what kind of retention rate they have.
Maybe. Some contests are put together so that Everyone’s a winner! There are plenty of contests that are worth your effort. You get to strut your stuff, win a little something and help out a fellow blogger a little bit.
Do you like contests? Yes, No or Maybe. Vote in the poll then voice your opinion in the comment section.

I vote no for the same reason you mentioned “I’ve seen some contests that were totally self serving for the host.”

I like them if it doesn’t take too much effort to enter them or if I really really want the prize. I entered the Haiku contest at copyblogger recently.
And to be completely self-serving, I’m going to be having one very soon

Hi Carla;
If the contest is difficult and the host is gaining more than I am, they can keep your contest. Also, from my point of view, we are all too busy for complicated 10 part contests. Keep it simple.
Kim;
Exactly, easy and fun. Often I enter contests for the fun and yeah, okay, sometimes just for the prize. And if my blogging buddy is holding one, I’ll definitely be there to support it and promote it. Keep me posted girlfriend!
I vote yes to contests if they are mutually beneficial. Also, try not to overdo it.
Just my two cents…

Matt:
Yeah, I agree with the over doing it advice. I read the requirements of one contest and I was tired before I was half way there.
I vote yes also but like matt said just don’t overdo it!
