Do You Think Blogging Is Becoming Over Saturated?
I asked my readers to contribute some questions they would like to see discussed and debated. What topics or questions would they like others opinions on?
Ross from Will it change you? asks; “Do you think blogging is becoming over saturated, particularly if you’re interested in making at least some income online?”
I have given the question some thought as to what my answer would be. I had a few thoughts for and against the discussion.
I wonder, what difference does it make?
First, Statistics state that the majority of people who start blogs lose interest within the first six months. So those people wouldn’t be your competition right?
Second, people visit different blogs for different reasons. We all want something. What are visitors looking for? That’s a million dollar question!
Third, a blog is as individual as the blogger. There can be a million blogs about blogging but no two are alike. The blog is a reflection of the author’s personality.
So, I’m thinking, “what difference does it make?”
Then, during the everyday challenges of blogging, I realized that maybe blogging is over saturated!
First, it is more difficult to be found amongst the countless blogs online. The task of marketing and promoting yourself can be overwhelming. Just when you think your hard work is paying off, your numbers trail off.
Second, even though some blogs are dead or have not been updated in months, some in over a year, they show up in the search engine before you do. They are taking up space!
Third, the money making part? Hmm, very often I do see the very same ads on a number of blogs.
So, what’s my answer?
I am not sure if it is a simple yes or no answer but those are the two choices for the poll purposes. If I have to choose, I think I will go with no, blogging is not over saturated. The individual aspect of a blog means there is only ONE me.
What are your opinions?

Hey there, thanks for mentioning my question – it’s one that I’m still thinking about! I’m voting yes to the question… but I don’t think a lot of the new starting blogs will last the test of time – it’s one thing to start a blog, another to keep it going with a fair degree of momentum….
Have a great week!
Ross´s last blog post..So you’ve heard it all before? Part 3: Destiny
Hello Ross,
I agree that most of the new blogs will not be around definitely beyond the 6 month mark especially if they are in it for the money. We both know we are not staying in it for the money!
Thanks for the input. I am not sure how this vote will go? I was confident in the Twitter poll but this one, we should get plenty of different perspectives.
Great question. At first, I thought it was when I first started this blog. In fact, someone sent me an email tearing me a new one because I’m “trying to do what so many people are already doing” and I’m glad I ignored her.
I guess it really depends on your niche as well as who is sticking with it.

Are you really blogging on a subject about blogging becoming over-saturated?
Isn’t that like holding a debate to question whether there are too many debates?
I’m going to say “yes”.
Jacob´s last blog post..Now that’s gross, even by my standards.
I guess it depends on what it’s becoming over saturated with. Crap? Most definitely. Quality with unique, interesting people writing the articles? Nope, not all that common.
Kim Woodbridge´s last blog post..Stuff This in Your RSS – 12/02/08 – Eleblog
It’s a good question, but irrelevant, IMHO.
I think that the term “saturated” sometimes comes off as a way of saying, “will I have to work hard to make money from this venture?” I’ve heard people say, “I would start a (fill in the blank) business, but there’s already too many people doing it.” Next thing you know, a business that they didn’t start opens up and flourishes, wiping out its veteran competitors.
Look at any market and you can say that it is saturated. It comes down to determination and will, good product and excellent customer service (and yes, bloggers deal with customers all the time – ad people, web host techs, other bloggers, etc…). The web may have changed the method of delivery, but it shouldn’t affect the quality of the product.
Do like Carla and ignore the naysayers.
Nope, not over saturated at all. Blogs are like email addresses, everyone should have one. Doesn’t mean you should post crap just to post, but it’s a nice way to check up on people, read what they are thinking and get to know a little bit about them. I guess if you’re trying to make money then the answer will be much different.

Hey people, somebody didn’t actually cast their vote in the poll! Come back, come back!
Carla – Sure there are literally millions of blogs out there somewhere..but only one like yours. The only thing I do with nay sayers is prove them wrong.
Jacob – he he, I never really thought about that but too funny!
Kim – I often want to give up on trying to figure out the success of some blogs. I’ve been to one blog that I had to literally hunt for the content between the ads, popups, flashes, etc. I’m not kidding. and another blog that basically talks about what she has for breakfast, please who cares…oops getting snarky?
Pete – I will have to get back to you on the “IMHO” comment when I ask one of my kids what that means.
I was in the insurance industry (I know, I’m much too nice for that industry) for about 12 years when I decided to start my own agency. I drove around town looking at a gas station with a convenience store on every corner, I think more banks then people and decided that the other guys were just going to have to share. I was very successful and sold my agency 10 yrs later for a handsome profit. You are right I decided to work hard and be me instead of focusing on others. Thanks for your positive input.
Natural – ha, you are so funny. Every blog has its reason and its personality. I like personal blogs much better than business blogs. Too stuffy. If I want stuffy I’ll go to work!
Great question Dee,
It sure looks like saturated as we are in and out of blogs as an important part of our daily schedule. But I’ve known people who haven’t heard the word “blog” and some even looking for help on opening an email id. I’m sure its not saturated or close to saturation yet.
btw, IMHO stands for ‘In my Humble Opinion’

Shri – ha ha, thanks for the lingo tip…I haven’t had a chance to ask my kids, lol (I know what that means)
I did a 5 minute poll at our local Elks Club, asked 10 people, (granted the median age is 80
) but half knew what a blog was which actually surprised me. Yeah, I think there is still room to grow and blogging is still fairly young.
See, you are living proof to my point! Congrats on the successful business, in spite of the odds.
Reminds me of a pizza joint that opened up on the “bad” side of town (which happens to be where I live). The place was a dump on the edge of a warehouse district and whatever was there before never really made it. This guy was determined and didn’t listen to the naysayers. He turned it into something special by offered a great product with great service and a unique atmosphere. Today, he’s a local hero and has lines forming to get in – every night of the week.

Pete,
Thank you and that pizza story is awesome. I can never hear enough of those kinds of success stories.
It worked because he “wanted” it to work, simple.
IMHO – “If you really, really want it you will really, really get it”
Yes, is my answer to this burning question.
Jannie´s last blog post..Well, it was Thanksgiving Friday and all…
Hi Jannie, Welcome. I tried looking for different statistics but didn’t come up with anything consistent. Everyone had a different and sometimes drastic opinion. I guess the number changes on a minute by minute basis!

I think there is still room for more blogs thus I would choose no to the poll question. As the economy turn bad now, there could be a rise in blogs as many got axed by corporate companies. But for now, the number of blogs are still acceptable.

The internet to me is like the universe – a feeling of space being infinite, therefore enough room. That’s my thinking and my other thought is each and every blog is as unique as each and every person.
