Twitter – Amazing Tool or Total Waste of Time?

We may as well start this series with everyone’s favorite discussion.  You either love it or you hate it.   What is the purpose of twitter?  That might be a debate all on it’s own.

I am not claiming to be an expert on twitter.  Far from it.  There are so many applications to use and/or enhance twitter that I couldn’t begin to explain twitter to it’s fullest.  Personally, I use twitter for a few reasons:

To meet and connect with people.

What possible connection can you make with 140 characters or less -  not words, characters.  Well that’s hard to explain.  I am certainly not “a woman of a few words”.  So in that respect, Twitter can be a challenge for me.  It’s hard to explain, it just works.  I have met a significant number of people on twitter and have come to really enjoy their tweets.  You can see their personality come through in different ways.  Sometimes through their comments, sometimes through their gravatars.

To Market my blog.

Yes, twitter has an element of business to it.  I usually tweet my posts every day.  There are different people on at different times of day so I usually tweet at breakfast, lunch  and dinner and of course throughout the night when I am supposed to be working on my blog.

To rant and rave when I feel like it!

I don’t know what part of twitter is most fun.  I love to see other people’s rants too.  I have actually started following some tweeple because of their funny tweets.  They are so amusing sometimes.  I usually get my chuckle for the day -  more than one actually.

My opinion:

I think you can gather from above what I think of Twitter.  I’ll be the first to vote.  I think Twitter is an amazing tool.  Please cast your vote and leave your opinion for or against in the comment section.

Hi Dee. I have passionately resisted Twitter for a couple of reasons. First, the names (Tweets, Tweeple, etc..) are just too sugary sweet and ‘cute’ for me. Second, seems like the absolute height of self absorption to be broadcasting what I’m doing and thinking moment by moment. And finally .. I already spend more time than I consider healthy in front of this computer screen (blogging, commenting etc..) and adding Twitter to my virtual activities .. I run the risk of losing my soul to the virtual devil :-) I’m really curious to see others’ views on Twitter .. thanks for starting this! Ian

  2. Hi Ian, he he, I have been trying to think of an original “tweet” word but they have all been used – still working on it! :)

Actually it often feels like you are talking to yourself, unless there is someone on that you know, you are! I like to put my daily posts out there. I get some traffic, not a lot.

I know what you mean about more time, but how much time can you use with 140 characters or less! It is somewhat amusing at times!

Thanks for your opinions and thoughts. I am interested to see what other people think.

  3. I don’t like the lingo surrounding Twitter either. I feel stupid when I say tweet. But then I don’t like the word blog either.

I think most people who know me, know that I love Twitter. I’ve found work through it, interesting links, amazing people, and have a lot of fun.

I don’t come across a lot of people who are ambivalent about it – they either really like or they really don’t.

    Dee,

I struggled with Twitter for a long time. I just didn’t get it. After giving it an honest try, I think it is a worthwhile tool when used correctly. it has created a lot of opportunity for me and I get more and more referrals from Twitter every day on my blog.

Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

Now that I’m starting to get the hang of it, I’m really enjoying it. I’ve met a lot of neat new people and have received tons of good advice, interesting articles to read and well wishes.

  10. Tracy,

I couldn’t figure out Twitter for the longest time. I would try it for a day or so then give up on it. Then everywhere I went, they talked about Twitter so I would give it a try again, finally I just kind of got the hang of it and started tweetin!

You know, it wasn’t until I saw that a couple of my friends were feeding their tweets into Facebook, that I really decided to roll up my sleeves and figure it out.

Now, I just have to convert everyone else!

  12. I don’t use facebook, I actually have myspace, you can only do so much! I focus mostly on twitter and stumbleupon..If I were full time I would use a few more.

I love Twitter! The fact that I can have my tweets roll over to my Facebook makes it that much more amazing! If you don’t have Facebook, Dee, you’ve got to get it. In my opinion, it’s much better with many more options that MySpace.

I like Twitter because of the short blurps that you’re able to post. It’s short, sweet, and to the point.

  14. Rachel,

I think loving Twitter is going to win hands down! I have an account of facebook but that is as far as I got with it. There are just so many social sites that we obviously can’t do them all…

I’ll try to see if I can look for you on facebook, then see what I think…

I don’t think ANYONE actually voted in the poll so that leads me to believe there is something wrong with the poll?

  15. LOL – I always have twitter running but I don’t always pay attention to it. :-)

  16. Thanks Kim…I don’t think anyone pays attention to the poll either, he he..Sometimes I tweet something then don’t come back for an hour and 5 minutes after my original tweet someone answers me or something…

  17. Natural says:

Twitter is fun and it can be an amazing tool as well. Once in a while I will tweet my post, but I use it just to read what people are doing. It’s a nice way to keep up if you don’t get a chance to visit all of the blogs you like..you can still stay connected with that person.

  18. Hello Natural,

“way to keep up if you don’t get a chance to visit all of the blogs” I never thought about twitter like that, that’s a good idea, it can be challenging to try and keep up with all of the blogs you like, I keep trying different techniques to see what will work best, still working on it!

  20. Hi Beth,

That is the great thing about Twitter, you can write whatever you want. Some are simple as “need coffee”, others are for tweeting (couldn’t help it) with each other, putting your new post out there, sharing other info. I just love it.

  21. teeni says:

I think Twitter is a great promotional tool. It’s also great for one-way communications if you are on the move. It’s certainly not a replacement for any other social networking application though so it just adds to the many things I have open on my desktop. Also, it can quickly and easily become cluttered with tweets you don’t care about and have a hard time searching through to find the ones you DO care about.

  22. Hi Teeni;

A great promotional tool indeed. I like to throw out a tweet about my newest when I can, I don’t like to use it soley for promotion, I do like to swap tweets. Yes, clutter is annoying, especially when the entire view is self-promotional. I thought about how it would be nice to have some sort of notice to who was online but can you imagine that list? Just something else to wade through.

Well Twitter is amazing and has won, hands down!
