“It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas!”
Tis’ the season to be jolly and to spend money. With the economy being in the toilet, many people are thinking twice about their holiday budget. If people
aren’t spending money then people aren’t making money or vice versa! Hmmm, which is it? It’s a vicious cycle.
Rachel of AverageGal.com has a question for you – Can you make money with your blog despite slumping sales? People spend money, period. At this point in time, not as much, not as often, but they still spend money. This might just be the best time to make money. People are going to be careful with their money so if you are offering the best bargains then you will be the one making money.
A blogger has to pick and choose the right affiliate marketing program to match their niche. If your blog is geared towards mommy bloggers discussing the latest childhood development stage then it is not going to be productive to try and sell computer hardware. (Yes, I know, a mommy will buy a computer.) You get the point.
Some blogs (I would say this blog ) have a wide range of diversity from books to equipment to software to electronics. Being so diverse gives the blogger more opportunity to display and promote a larger variety of products. Hence, a little more advantage to make a little money.
So yes, Rachel, there is a Santa Claus.
Have you changed the way you monetize your blog since the economy has turned ugly? Do you have any strategies you could share?

I think monetizing really has to fit your niche. As you mention in your mommy selling computer hardware example, there’s no point targeting the wrong audience.
Having said that, I’m certainly no money making expert, so I’m keen to hear other people’s views on this!
Keep up the interesting articles!

Ross – there is more to monetizing your blog then throwing adsense in. I have been an entrepreneur for 25 plus years and one thing I have learned is to go with your gut feeling. You are a consumer too, what do you want?
