“How Do You Balance Work and Life?”

It can be a challenge to balance work and life.  Such a struggle.  You always want to give 100% to both.   Usually you feel like you short changed one or the other.

You need to realize you can only do so much in either case.  That is the main thing.  You have many roles, obligations and desires.  The challenge is giving each segment of your life the amount of time that makes YOU feel good.

Work Responsibility:

It doesn’t matter that you have 5 reports to get out today, if it is only possible to do 3 than that is all you are going to do.  You can only do what you can do.  That sounds so simple and matter of fact and it is!  If there are 5 reports to get out then you need to pursue the option of help.  Yes, help.  It is not a crime to ask for help.  In fact, it is a sign of a great leader.  There may be some tasks that you are the most qualified to complete but I can tell you some of your daily routine can be delegated to someone else.

Home Responsibility:

The same theory works at home.  You have to choose what is important.  Is it more important to have a nice clean bathroom or to help your child with her homework?  Do you want your children to remember that their house was always spic and span or that their parents always seemed to find time for them?

Choices:

It all boils down to choices.  Sound complicated?  Not really.  You just have to take a breath and give your situation a little thought.  Really, is this going to matter, is it going to make a difference?

What do you do to balance work and life?   Do you stress about work while you are at home, stress about home while you are at work?  What works for you?

i definately dont stress about work at home.. but i do stress about home at work.. and next time i’m stressing about cleanin the bathroom.. i’ll have to stop and remember that… what my children are going to remember.. clean bathroom vs. time with kids.

  2. Good Morning Danielle – Most things we stress about – what do they say 95% of the things we stress about never come to pass – in hindsight wasn’t so bad. I guess we just have to stop and take a breather sometimes. It all sounds good in theory, but it’s one of those “easier said than done” issues.

  3. I don’t know if I balance it … I just muddle along and do the best I can. I definitely let the house go – not my top priority. My daughter and I will always choose to laugh over silly cats on youtube than a messy house.

  4. Kim – if you really think about it, (as you already know) those cats are so much more important. My daughter still talks about the way I taught her how to count. Just a little change in my tone of voice with each number, apparently silly…

    Dee,

I keep my door closed when it’s work time. Everyone knows – Do Not Disturb The Artist :-)

I take breaks when I need to, snuggle and love on the kid and the SO when I feel like it and hang out otherwise with the fam when I feel like maybe I’ve been neglecting them. They also know that when I jump off the couch (this could be at any time) that I’ve gotten inspired and I’ve headed downstairs and closed the door.

I know, I know. That is about as balanced as my diet. (Hostess is a food group, isn’t it?)

Great post, Dee. You are prolific.

    Cheers

  6. George – that sounds like me on the treadmill, mommy’s time, only disturb in case of fire or blood! I should have added at the end of the post that after you have the whole work life balance worked out, try adding blogging on top of it!

I don’t always succeed in balancing the 2 but the times I don’t it’s always the work life winning over the personal life. I am pretty good at kicking my own butt when that happens though and drag myself back to my personal life.

  8. Good Morning DutchBitch,

“have to” usually wins out over “want to” until it takes over the majority of your time, then you get to a point where enough is enough. so much for balance!
