It’s Time For TumbleMoose!
November 17, 2008 by BloggerNewbie
George Angus is a full-time blogger from TumbleMoose Productions. He writes web content for a number of sites, is currently working on his novel, and just recently launched into the world of blogging. His writing is certainly witty and delightfully entertaining.
I went full time with my Freelance Writing about a month ago. Some things have ended up being a surprise for me. I’ll give you an example, and I can’t believe I’m even saying this:
Weekends suck. There, I’ve said it. No taking it back.
Right now, Dee is going, “Oh man, what did I get myself into? This Tumblemoose guy is a nut job.” Quite possibly a true statement but hear me out on this one.
Weekends suck for me because it seems the blogosphere shuts down, rolls up the sidewalks and goes home. With a few exceptions, my RSS feeds go down to zero, my Outlook is quiet and folks are apparently out having a life. The nerve.
I try to not post much on the weekends because I feel like the window of traffic opportunity is just not there. In the relatively short time I’ve been around, it’s pretty clear that my weekend posts get far fewer hits then the ones I post during the week. Hmmm. In thinking about it, maybe that’s why the smart ones are busy having a life on the weekends, because they’ve noticed the same trend.
With that said, if I get really inspired for a post topic, I’ll write it. The intention is always, “I’ll just get it written, but I won’t post until Monday.” Yeah, right. I am a writer after all, and by definition, I’m needy and want all of the world to stroke my ego. Dontcha know I’m posting that sucker as soon as I’ve got it spell-checked.
So I’m thinking this makes me some kind of a blogging addict. Does anyone know of a Bloggers Anonymous support group? I can see it now, “Hi, my name is George and I’m a Blogaholic. – HI GEORGE!”
All seriousness aside, there are actually internet addiction sites out there and apparently it’s legit. I don’t really think I’m addicted but it does kind of beg the question: How much blogging is too much? I think it’s a great question and I don’t really have the answer.
I’m curious, what do other bloggers think? Do you go into mild depression on Friday evenings? Do you check your email on Monday mornings BEFORE your first cup o’ java? Have others observed the weekend slowdown or is it just me?

George:
Thanks for the guest post. I am on my computer all weekend, I usually post quick blurbs, but I try to post something. I also try to work on my posts for the week but as I said in Saturday’s post, I get easily distracted. I really need discipline! One more thing, if blogging is your “job” shouldn’t you have a weekend too? ha ha
Wow George! You sound just like Bloggernewbie. I think you both are addicted. Most addicts dont admit when they are addicted.. right? lol. Nice post.
There is definitely a slowdown on the weekend. I don’t get as much traffic on my site and I don’t get as much weekend. I don’t have a live either, George, but I’m kind of glad for the peace. Because of the quiet, though, I don’t post anything on Saturdays and just my list of links on Sunday.
I don’t think I’m addicted to blogging but I am addicted to the Internet. I was lost on Saturday when the power went out for 3 hours …

Dee, Thank you so much for having me here. I’ve just had a great time and I’m looking forward to conquering the Blogosphere with you!
@Danielle: Uh-oh, Dee. She’s on to us!
@Kim: True, it does allow me to get in some quality stumbling time. Ha! Yeah, power outages are stinky!
Cheers

I do think that it’s easy to get addicted! One really sucessful post can send you reeling into another dimension. Your brain starts going 1,000 miles per minute… Must check for new comments… refresh… refresh… refresh! LOL - and then, “what can be the next big topic”? I definitely know the feeling!
Great post George!

Interesting that you don’t get alot of traffic on the weekends.
Two of my biggest traffic rises were from a Saturday post.
I think alot of people look at the weekend as a slow time, so their work is of a little less quality.
If you want to see the big numbers on the weekend. Write something awesome!
As for those readers that don’t read your blog on the weekend. They will always see it come monday, which will again drive even more traffic for that post.
Just something to think about.

@ Danielle - Don’t make me tell the whole blogosphere that you are addicted to shopping, she actually breaks out into a sweat when she sees a sale paper! ha ha ha
@ Kim - I definitely see a slow down on the weekend, and although I don’t have a life (much) I try to use the weekend to prepare for the week. I do post at least one day on the weekend. I actually try to post both days but the last couple of weekends, it hasn’t worked out that way.
@ George - Thank you for sharing your words with us. I am sure my readers welcome the refreshing change!
@ Rachel - I think it’s not so much that “I have to surf” as everything takes so long and you get diverted so quickly that half the time you forget what and where you started (oh no, this sounds like an excuse, like denial?)
@ Steven - I also think the weekend is a slow down in traffic, like half, and you are right, I don’t put my “best” post on the weekend for that reason, but maybe you are right and I am creating my own slow down. I might just experiment with that theory.
I don’t get to be online that often, but seeing a drop in RSS readers on weekends is nothing unusual. But being a blogger addict, we sure know that you will still continue posting whether during days with lesser traffic or not.

@ Daniel - I can’t believe people call us addicts? All we want is just one more minute! Steven was saying that we may just be in a cycle, write a shorter or lesser post on the weekends because we don’t get as much traffic or we don’t get as much traffic on the weekends because we write shorter or lesser posts? I think the down time on the weekends seems to be a consensus.
Hi George,
I haven’tnoticed too much of a drop in traffic over the wekend to my Blog, however the website I manage in work takes a nosedive at the weekends, it sucks!
With regards to your question, how much Blogging is too much, When my kids beg me to get off the laptop, not just so they can have a go, but because they want Family time, its time to put it down and walk away for a few hours. I try to take 3 days off in a row every 2 weeks, just to prevent burnout, but then I’m always left with a pile of catching up to do, its a no-win situation, if you Blog, you BLOG, end of! There is no part-time Blogging!

Hi Ciara:
I find it interesting that most of the bloggers commenting on weekend traffic say the numbers take a dive. And I agree as my traffic also takes a dive on the weekends. I wonder what the difference is? Maybe the type of blog, technical vs opinion type content? What do you think?
It’s great to see so many comments here. I think it shows that traffic over the weekends may be dependent on the type of blog and the type of blogging we’re doing.
One thing is for sure. We overall seem to be a hard working lot, and never too far from our blogging, even if we’re not at our computer.
Thanks for all of the insight. Keep ‘em coming!
Cheers
George

@ George - Sooo you’re saying we should all join a support group? Maybe on the weekends when we seem to have more time?
