“Creative Titles Are Crucial”
I was looking at my RSS reader today trying to decide which post to read. I have so many blogs on
the reader that I enjoy reading but I simply can’t set aside enough time to read them all every day.
I have tried to organize them into different categories – A-list blogs, peer blogs, blogs by topic, weekly blogs, etc. I don’t know if all readers are created equal or if they are set up the same. I have Google Reader. All of my blog titles or links are in a sidebar to the left. Each blog title is listed in a larger right side bar (for a lack of a better word). Each blog lists a title then the first few lines of the post.
I can tell you from everyday daily experience that titles are crucial!
They need to be interesting enough to click through to read some of the post. I read somewhere ( I read so much I can’t ever remember where ) NOT to use cutesy titles or cliche’ type titles. If you are somewhat of a regular reader of my blog, you will no doubt know that I like cutesy or cliche’ type titles. I don’t know if cutesy or cliche’ are the right words or phrases that I am looking for but I do like different titles. I like to be creative and catchy.
Your title needs to draw attention. That is the first thing your potential readers see. They also see the first and/or second line of your post ( in Google reader anyway ). If these two items are not captivating your hopeful reader will move on to the next title.
Do your titles stand out amongst the flurry of titles?

Do your titles stand out amongst the flurry of titles? Hey BloggerNewbie, you gave me an idea that I’ve been doing in my head a little bit, organizing my blogs according to categories. I wonder if my reader can do that. I’m going to try thanks and nope, I don’t use Google.
I do try to make my titles interesting. I know I only have a few seconds to grab someone’s attention. The crazier or more thought provoking, the better.

What reader do you use? It’s easier for me to wade through all the blogs when I’m organized. I break them all up. I always like your titles so you must be doing something right!
I totally agree with you, I get so confused witht the volume of posts that come up on my RSS feeds, I’m loyal to a few blogs and will read every single post, but there are a lot that I just pick and choose what to read by the title, but in saying that, I am notoriously bad at naming my posts:)

I love trying to come up with creative titles. I sometimes write posts that come from “one liners”!
I like question titles, I think of a question then write the answer. I’m also loyal to a few blogs and always check what they have to say. I like regular features too like your Freaky Fundays!
Good point! I know that even when I’m scanning through my Google Reader, there’s no way that I can read all of them. I just pick and choose based on the titles. There’s no other way for me to decide! On the other hand, as a blogger, trying to come up with creative titles can definitely be a challenge!
@ Rachel
Definitely a challenge! I try to pay closer attention than usual about the things I like about websites and the things I don’t like (pop-ups) and use them in my blog. I guess the titles apply to most everything I read..magazines, newspapers, etc, so wow, they are important. Now I just made myself a little more nervous!
Absolutely, yet very difficult. The most intriguing titles, i’ve read are by problogger. I can’t help clicking on every link that comes up on Darren’s twitter stream. Its like hez been reading my mind. I find it very difficult to write such titles, probably because, I write my post first and title later (well, most often). I know this is detrimental and i’m working on changing it
@ Shri
I usually write my posts from titles or at least one liners. Sometimes I get so far off track I change the title, sometimes I just tweak it. It’s interesting yet difficult to try and view blogs from a non-blogger point of view.

Yay! I missed my CommentLuv! Thank you very much! You are SO smart
Thank you for ALL the work you do on the CommentLuv plugin. Too often we don’t usually know who’s behind all the work that makes our lives so much easier.
Blog Post Titles are so tricky, I have tried crazy long ones that are like run on sentences. I have tried the cutesy as you call them and of course I have tried the straight to the point type. I have found that using keywords that pertain to whats going on in the media tend to catch the eye.
I used Obama’s name and got loads of hits
I use some very generic name and posts tend to flop
@ Debo
Using the media is a great idea! I didn’t think of that. I’ll try a few things and let you know what kind of results I get, I imagine the post would have to be relevant to the media topic or visitors will leave as fast as the arrive. Thanks for that idea, I will really give it some thought.

You are absolutely right. To stand out in a sea of great blogs, usually your title makes all the difference. In fact, it’s the most important part of your article that deserves much of your attention. It’s the most crucial indeed.

I really like to play around with titles too, puns, cheezy cliches’, that sort of thing. Blogging is just too much fun. I’m sure I’ll be visiting again and I hope the same for you.
