Things I’ve Learned In The Past Year

Hank from “My Investing Blog” is running a contest Things I’ve Learned in the Past Year< in conjunction with Free from Broke What are you looking to do with your finances in the new year? I discussed earlier today what I was going to do with my finances in the new year. These guys are making me think!

I’ve learned too much in the past year. Well I should say that the things I learned came from hard lessons. The most amazing lesson I learned is that it truly does take a whole village to raise a child. Without the whole village, I don’t know what my family would have done. I can only imagine what would have happened but luckily the village came together and helped us raise up our child. Community means everything.

Last year, just after Thanksgiving, the unspeakable happened to our family. My then 10 month old grandson was diagnosed with cancer. We didn’t even know how to spell cancer. I can still barely speak the word. It makes me physically ill just thinking about it. I shared our story during Childhood Cancer Awareness month and have a 4 part series of posts about Drake’s journey – I don’t know where to begin. He is on a good path right now.

I don’t think I discussed (throughout the entire series) how our community came together and literally saved us . They saved us from complete breakdown – physically, emotionally and financially. While we were traveling back and forth from hospital to home continuously over a 4 month period, our community was putting together a jamboree for my daughter’s family. We were stressing about the baby, about the little granddaughter (7 yrs old) who was left at home too much who didn’t understand, about the weather and treacherous driving conditions, about the holidays, about how we were going to recover from this financial burden. Our community took care of a major stress so we could concentrate on our family.

Yes, the most important thing I learned in the last year is that it is true that it takes a whole village to raise a child.

  2. @ Danielle

Sometimes I have so much to say, and so many thoughts going through my head at once I’m not sure if they make sense once they get on paper or in this case, screen. Still makes a lump in my throat. I say still like it was forever ago.
