What’s the worst that can happen?

That’s a good question to ponder when trying to make a decision with any situation.

You can imagine a lot of “worst things” that could happen. Now you have to evaluate how likely these “worst things” are.

I wanted to play hooky Friday. I never take time off for lots of reasons but I needed a day off. A few problems with this scenario. I am the only employee. They sort of have a backup person but it’s not reliable and it certainly won’t be reliable for the long haul. She’s only 78 years old!

That is one of the many reasons I am not crazy about my job. There are three other people in the office – two attorneys – owner and son-in-law and office manager – owner’s wife. Yeah, it’s a joy. It is not only difficult to take any time off; it’s even difficult to go to the bathroom!

I don’t know but most people probably wouldn’t even give it a thought about taking time off but I guess I’m not most people. The only time it is not difficult taking time off is when someone in my family is sick. I am still torn but my responsibility is with my family first. It’s hard when you are torn between your responsibilities. I am usually annoyed that I feel guilty that I am not at work – I’m the only one there – yet, hellllo -if my family is sick, then whatever, I am going to be with them. But it is aggravating that the decision has to be such turmoil. I suppose I create the turmoil in my own mind. They don’t ever say anything, I just feel torn.

All week I was wondering if I would be able to get up enough courage to call in sick on Friday. I knew I really need a day home alone. What’s the worst that can happen?

This whole scenario sounds so dramatic doesn’t it? It’s just a day off! But I do stress about it. Hyperventilate even.. It’s that whole “what will people think or what will people say” trauma. I know it shouldn’t bother me like this but it does.

Having said that, I needed to decide – What is the worst that can happen? I suppose the worst that can happen would be that I would be fired. However, that being the worst that could happen is debatable! And unlikely. There really isn’t any consequences to speak of (other than I would have a lot of work piled up). I decided to take a couple of vacation days and make a long 4 day weekend. Am I a coward or is this plan the best way to go? I can’t decide at this minute.
