United States Labor Day – 2008

The United States celebrates Labor Day on Monday, September 1, 2008. Labor Day is observed and celebrated the first Monday in September. The holiday originated in 1882 as a day off for laborers. The celebration of Labor Day was first proposed as a street parade to promote to the public the strength of the trade and labor organizations. This parade was often followed by a gathering and celebration for the workers and their families.

Congress made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894 and all fifty states have made Labor Day a state holiday.

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated and acknowledged by most Americans as the “end of the summer”. Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has developed from a labor union celebration into a “last fling of summer” party. It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class.

Who founded or proposed legislation for Labor Day to become a National Holiday? Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners was first to suggest a day to honor those who labor for our country.

But Peter McGuire’s place in Labor Day history is of mixed opinion. It is also thought that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The fundamental force of labor added considerably to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known! It is fitting, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.

Traditionally, my family has celebrated Labor Day with rest and relaxation. To us it is a day of tribute to the laborer; a day for the laborer to choose whatever activity they choose.

How do you celebrate Labor Day?
