Keywords: Part 4 of the 5 part series – Implementing the Plan:
So you made your list, you’ve checked it twice; you decided which ones were naughty or nice! So you have pared it down to about 10-20 highly focused keywords, now what do you do with them? You prepare them for the debut!
Most likely, if you did your keyword research homework
correctly and thoroughly, some of the words on your list already appear in your site content. What do you do with these keywords now? Where do you put them, how do you use them? Start thinking about how many pages you’ll need to create to support these new words, and how and where your keyword phrases will be used.
We typically recommend only going after three or four related keywords per page (five if you can balance them properly). Any more than that and you run the risk of diluting your page to the point where your rank is pointless.
Your on-page content isn’t the only place where you can insert keywords. Keywords should also be used in several other elements on your site:
• Title Tag
• Headings and Subtitles
• Meta Description Tags
• Links
Once you have identified which keywords you want to use on each page of your website, then start with a keyword title on the page (preferably using an H1 or H2 tag) – ‘Welcome to my website’ probably isn’t powerful enough! Tell your visitors immediately what your site offers. Blogging for the “real beginner” for example, tells your visitor they will be finding the basics for blogging. Add some of your keywords to subtitles as well. Subtitles draw the eye to a particular part of your post. Believe it or not, some people aren’t going to read every post word for word…
Make your keywords flow naturally into your content. Do not wedge a keyword in and make the content fit. Your content should never sound forced. Avoid over-using your keyword as it may be interpreted as spamming.
Meta-description tags at the end of each post also offers another way for keywords to be used. The meta tags describe what your post is all about which also relates (hopefully) to your entire blog.
Link back to other posts in your archives (Welcome to My Blog) that relate to your current post or page. Use your keywords at the same time you get your visitors to browse around your blog!
You’ve spent a lot of time on your keywords; make sure you use them in all the appropriate fields to get the maximum benefit. You did good BloggerNewbie. Now implement your plan and welcome your visitors!
I will conclude the series “KeyWords” tomorrow with “Keywords: Part 5 of the 5 part series – Keep going”.
“Keep going”? What does that mean? I thought we were done with this project? Tune in tomorrow and find out what the last part is or if there is a “last part”!
