Keywords: Part 1 of the 5 Part Series: The Process of using KeyWords

key-word1 Keywords? What are keywords? Do I need them? Keywords, apparently, are vitally important in your search engine optimization crusade. It is important that you target the right keywords. If your site is targeting the wrong keywords, the search engines may never find you, and hence your readers will never find you. Or the wrong readers will find you. Not good. This will result in lost advertising dollars and meaningless rankings. By targeting the wrong keywords, you not only put valuable advertising dollars at risk,  you are also throwing away all the time and energy you put into getting your site to rank for those terms to begin with. If you want to climb the ranking list and make money, you can’t afford to do that.

Part 1 of the 5 Part Series speaks of the analysis of your keywords:

Do Not Fall in the Misinterpretation Trap. The keyword analysis is key to your success. One of the most common mistakes about introducing keywords is the belief that you already know what keywords your reader will use to find you. You don’t. Not without first doing some research. You may know what your site is about and how you would find it, but it’s difficult to predict how a reader would go about looking for it. This is due to bloggers being too close to their site. It’s too common to you. Words that are everyday words to you might not be so common to your readers. Remember, your reader probably doesn’t use the same jargon you do. If they did, they wouldn’t need you. When describing your site, stay away from blogging babble.

Another misconception is that common or general terms are the most important for rankings. Wrong. This is not going to help especially if the term you’re going after has nothing to do with your site. Don’t try to gain ranking by listing the term “Google”. Probably a ton of people will type that word into their search bar daily, but they’re not hoping to find you. They’re looking for Google. Being ranked number one for a term no one would associate with your blog is a waste of time and money (and it may get you in trouble!). Your site may see a get a lot of visitors, but readers may be annoyed and won’t stick around.

Create a list of top possible keywords:

So you need an ensemble of keywords? Trying to figure out what readers will use to find your blog can be a trying experience. The key is to start slowly. First, create a list of potential keywords.keyword Write down the first thing that comes to your mind. Include phrases that are extensive yet targeted. What is your blog about? What are you trying to accomplish? Brainstorm enough words to cover all the aspects of your site. Avoid overly generic terms like blog or blogger. These words are incredibly difficult to rank for and won’t drive qualified traffic to your site. Focus on words that are relevant, but not overly used. Focus on words that are unique to your site yet common enough for readers to use in their search.

If you need help brainstorming ideas, ask friends or colleagues for help. The more you work on your site the more you don’t see about your site. Sometimes they are able to see your site differently than the way you see it. It’s also difficult to “stand back and see” what is attractive about your site. Also, it may be worth looking at other blogs in your niche and what they are using for keywords. Take a look at their Meta Keyword tag. What words do they use and find useful? Do the same words apply to your site? How can you develop your keyword list to make it better?
Tomorrow, we will discuss Part 2 in the process of using KeyWords – Make the KeyWord Research Tool Your New Best Friend.

What do you do to enhance your keyword strategy? Any secrets to rankings? Let us share the words!
